After years of the use of the file Explorer, I eventually turned into a better third -party file manager. However, this change brought a fresh view: File Explorer is still an important part of Windows, and with some smart updates, Microsoft can greatly improve it for everyone.

Improved tab support

Windows 11 finally introduced the tabed browsing to the file Explorer, which is a long application feature that allows you to easily navigate between different folders without opening a new window each time. However, the current implementation feels incomplete. There is no option for pinning the frequently used tabs, no keyboard shortcuts to reopen closed tabs, and the tabs have not been restored after restart.

For example, I often switch between coding, writing and video editing, and each has a dedicated tab group that I need when I need.

The dual pan navigation is another major miss in the file exporter. Along with two pans, you can quickly drag and drop the files or folders between different directory without opening multiple windows. It also makes it easier to compare the contents of two folders to clean the duplicate and manage the backup. Only this feature can significantly improve production capacity for power users.

Apps such as file pilots and OPS directory handle multi -tasking effectively. Your tabs have been saved, often an easy way to pin used folders, and you can make as many panels inside the same window. File Explorer can learn from the implementation of them so that more versatile experience can be offered.

Improve the file preview and see options

The file preview feature in the File Explorer is contradictory and offers third -party file managers and even power tiives. Although it supports ordinary forms such as photos, text, PDF, HTML, and .reg files, it may be difficult to get it working.

It strives to display the less common types of the file and, in my experience, often fails to preview text files and PDFs. The more reliable preview option is an easy way to quit quickly without opening the files or using third party apps to preview content.

One of my favorite files is the column vow, which allows you to browse folders in a tree -like structure. You can use your keyboard to browse through the folders without going back and forth. This is a feature that I wish to adopt the File Explorer to see where you are.

Make the search faster

File Explorer is relatively slower than its third -party replacement, such as file pilot. The search function works at a crawling speed and takes permanently to show the results, especially when scanning large folders or external drives. Many things play an important role in its slow search, including the lack of system wide indexing unless it manually enables specific folders.

Certainly, you can rebuild the entire search index to improve Windows search speed, add folders and file types to indexing options, and adapt to non -indexed spots to close the search for metadata to find files faster. However, most will never go through these settings and will not be dealing with slow search problems, which will make it necessary for Microsoft to implement a stronger solution outside the box.

Scan the entire NTF and Ref file system, such as the third -party search utility and create your own index to provide quick search results, even if they have to push the CPU to a ted. A fast and more responsive search will reduce the savings and frustration of the time, especially for those of us who have large files.

File Explorer allows you to find files faster using filters such as date, name, size and type (file type). However, this is less intuitive, and most people have never used these filters because they are buried under the settings. While the third party apps such as the files let you hide the part you want and the important thing is to remember your choice.

Microsoft can borrow from the file pilot and let you put your most used actions (such as renaming, properties, and open) in the upper part of the menu. Advanced file manager such as Directory Ops allows full interface customization – you can reset the toolbar and decide where the buttons go. Acute file transfers and better mistakes

The file explor can feel slow, especially when moving a large number of files and moving between drives.
