It’s also full of useful features that most people barely explore. But its biggest flaw is that it doesn’t keep any meaningful record of your PC’s performance, and it’s not exactly the most user-friendly tool either.

It’s also beautifully designed and far easier to understand. In many ways, it’s what Task Manager could’ve evolved into, but never quite did.

If you’re like most people, you probably only open the Task Manager when your PC slows down, and you want to see what’s going on. CPU spikes, memory usage, disk activity, network traffic, Task Manager can help you monitor it all. But the biggest problem is, it’s all real-time data. And that’s not always helpful.
For instance, if an app or process was running wild a few moments ago but now has suddenly gone quiet, Task Manager won’t tell you that. There’s no built-in history to show you what happened.
This is where AppControl is different. It not only shows you real-time data but also keeps a detailed three-day performance history. In the Activity tab, you’ll see a timeline with a simple slider. Use it, and you can scrub back through CPU, GPU, RAM, or Disk usage at any specific moment.
Hover your mouse over the chart, and it’ll show you the exact CPU temperature and usage at any given second. This means you can pinpoint exactly when your CPU usage jumped to 95 percent and which app or process was responsible. This kind of insight is invaluable when you’re troubleshooting or monitoring system performance.
Don’t just “End Task,” disable them for good
You have the control
One of the most useful Task Manager features is the End task option. When an app is not responding or refusing to close, the End task can help you deal with it. AppControl offers a similar option called Kill. But it doesn’t stop there. It even includes a Disable option, and yes, it does exactly what you think. It prevents the app or process from running on your PC at all. This is great if there’s a specific app or process you don’t want running in the background ever.
Of course, this kind of power comes with responsibility. Disabling the wrong system process could cause instability or even break certain features. But thankfully, AppControl doesn’t leave you guessing. If you come across an unfamiliar app or process, right-click it and choose App Details. The app will show a brief description of what it does, so there’s no need to Google it.
There’s even an option to block all apps from a specific publisher. If you decide you don’t trust or need software from a certain vendor, you can prevent any of their apps from running at all. That’s a level of control you simply don’t get with the default Windows Task Manager.
Event logs and handy alerts
Stay informed without feeling overwhelmed
Task Manager doesn’t offer detailed event logs, so when something goes wrong, your only option is to check the Event Viewer and dig through system entries. But if you’ve ever tried doing that, you know it’s not exactly user-friendly. It feels overwhelming, something designed for IT pros.
This is another thing that AppControl does better. In the Event tab, it shows details about which app launched, when it happened, and if it accessed any sensitive sensors such as the microphone or camera. Everything is laid out in a way you can easily understand.
Of course, event logs aren’t something you’ll need every day. What you’ll appreciate is the privacy alerts it shows. Every time an app or process uses your camera, listens to your microphone, or tracks your location, AppControl shows an alert so you can act quickly. It can even notify you when an unsigned app launches and runs in the background.
And yes, these alerts are fully customizable, so you can disable the ones you don’t need and even set quiet hours so you are not interrupted at the wrong time.
AppControl isn’t perfect, but still worth using
No software is flawless, and AppControl is no exception. While it does so many things better than Task Manager, there are still things it simply can’t do. For instance, you can’t use AppControl to manage startup apps, view important system specs, or run new tasks. You also can’t do things like restart Windows Explorer or set process priorities.
Despite these shortcomings, you’ll still want to use AppControl simply because it’s user-friendly. Even if you haven’t used Task Manager ever, you’ll feel right at home while using AppControl. And the best part is, it’s completely free and shows zero ads.
