Redmi could soon launch a phone with a 165Hz refresh rate screen, if everything goes according to plan. According to a post by well-known tipster Digital Chat Station on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Xiaomi’s sub-brand has officially started researching whether to use a 165Hz panel in future devices.
Interestingly, the move seems to be influenced by OnePlus. The tipster claims that Redmi’s interest was sparked after OnePlus began evaluating 165Hz flat displays “in large quantities,” suggesting a trend may be forming among Chinese smartphone makers.
OnePlus is testing a phone and tablet with a 165Hz screen
OnePlus is reportedly testing both a 165Hz smartphone and a gaming tablet with similar specs. The latest OnePlus Pad 2 Pro comes close with a 13.2-inch 3.4K LCD screen at 144Hz. It runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite, packs a 12,140mAh battery, supports 67W fast charging, and is surprisingly slim at 5.97mm

A jump to 165Hz on a phone may not be about practical performance gains. It could be more about keeping up with specs in the Android arms race, where numbers, even if meaningless to the average user, still sell.
If Redmi does go ahead with a 165Hz screen, it would be the first in the brand’s lineup to do so. And the phone featuring it would likely target the same gaming-oriented audience as OnePlus. But for now, it’s still early to say anything for sure.
Things are unfolding just for internal testing purposes. And to be honest, 165Hz sounds like overkill for a lot of people.
