MG set to unveil Tesla Model Y rival at Goodwood Festival of Speed

MG is set to launch a new Tesla Model Y rival at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The brand posted a teaser image to social media stating that “all will be revealed” about “the beginning of our next chapter” on 10 July, with no further details.

The image appears to show the IM6 crossover, suggesting MG is poised to launch the more premium-focused brand in the UK, as it has done already in the right-hand drive Australian market.

Given the Australian precedent, and that the teaser was posted by MG, it is possible that the brand – a joint-venture between MG owner SAIC, e-commerce firm Alibaba and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech – could sell its models in the UK under the MG brand.

Indeed, MG has already begun to push up-market with the recent launches of the Cyberster sports car and Cyber X concept, as well as models such as the S5 EV, a more mainstream replacement for the value-focused ZS EV.

Autocar previously reported that IM models, with the L6 saloon having made cameos in MG’s flagship showroom in Marylebone, London.

In China, the IM6 SUV is offered with a choice of lithium-ion and semi-solid-state batteries that are said to yield ranges from 372 miles to 497 miles – although these figures are according to China’s more lenient testing regimen.

Power outputs range from 329bhp to 767bhp, with the most potent version completing the 0-62mph sprint in a claimed 3.5sec.

It also packs 800V electricals, allowing it to charge at up to 396kW and complete a 30-80% refill in just over 15min.
