Motorola’s new flagship phone looks amazing, but it has one glaring issue

Summary

  • The Motorola Signature features a gorgeous design with a textured back inspired by twill and linen.
  • The phone packs flagship specs, including a 6.8″ 165Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, 16GB/512GB memory, a 5200mAh battery, and a four 50MP Sony cameras (one up front, three on the back).
  • The Signature starts at €999 and will be available nearly everywhere but North America.

Lately, Motorola has been known primarily for its Razr line of foldable devices. However, the company can still make a fantastic slab-style phone, too, and it’s out to prove it with the newly announced Motorola Signature. This phone is aimed at the high-end market as a direct challenger to other flagships from companies like OnePlus and Samsung.

Unfortunately, the Motorola Signature does not appear to be coming to the US at this time. Moto has launches scheduled globally, starting with Europe, but North America is conspicuously absent from the list.

This phone is gorgeous

Seriously, look at this thing!

Physically, the Motorola Signature really stands out, which isn’t something you can say about many phones these days. The phone is available in two colors: PANTONE Carbon (kind of a slate gray) and PANTONE Martini Olive (a yellowish green). The phone is exceptionally thin at just 6.99mm — though not as thin as Motorola’s 2016 Moto Z, one of the thinnest phones ever made.

The back has a textured look that calls to mind old Motorola phones like the Moto X from 2014 (it even has the dimple!). Each color has a slightly different texture: the Matrini Olive color has a “twill-inspired finish,” while the Carbon option is inspired by linen. While that might not sound that appealing on paper, the actual look is stunning.

Motorola Signature specs

Flagship all the way (almost)

Around front, the Signature sports a massive 6.8″ display with a 165Hz refresh rate and a 50MP Sony camera. The company claims the display is the brightest display with Pantone Validated Colors in its category. The back features a trio of 50MP Sony lenses, including an ultrawide and a 3x periscope telephoto. Here’s a rundown of the key specs:

Display

6.8″ Extreme AMOLED

Memory

16 GB

Storage

512 GB

Processor

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5

Battery

5200mAh

Cameras

Front: 50 MP

Rear: 50 MP main, 50 MP ultrawide, 50 MP periscope telephoto

The processor is obviously not the highest-end option available — that would be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. While this is a bit disappointing, it should still offer plenty of power. That chip will help power Motorola’s useful AI features.

The phone also includes some unusual features clearly aimed toward a luxury crowd, including “bespoke experiences and exclusive services across travel, dining, wellness, lifestyle, and exclusive club access.” If we’re honest, we’re mostly interested in the device, but there’s probably a crowd out there who will find these kinds of perks appealing.

The Motorola Signature will initially be available in select European countries with a starting price of €999. It will come to the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia later in the year. Here’s holding out hope the company will change its mind and opt for a North American release.
