The tablet utilises the Pixel Tablet hardware, but runs on a different, privacy-focused operating system, /e/OS, instead of Google’s Android ‒ the result is a Pixel tablet with all elements of Google removed. It does not collect user data ‒ including at operating system level ‒ runs on open source software, and offers additional privacy features and customisation that give users back control of their data when using apps, browsing the web and more.

The ethical tech company has released the tablet in response to ‘significant demand’ from its dedicated customers and community, who enjoy the Murena smartphones and regularly request a tablet offering the same level of privacy.

The Murena Pixel Tablet boasts a 10.95-inch LCD display with a sharp 2560 x 1600 resolution and Tensor G2 chipset, making it ideal for work, gaming, watching and more. It features front and rear cameras, 128 GB internal storage and 8GB RAM. Bluetooth connectivity and the USB-C port make it easy to connect peripherals such as keyboards, mice and gaming controllers.

The /e/OS operating system has a simple, user-friendly design that makes switching from other systems easy. It offers unparalleled insight into data being consumed on the device, allowing users to see which apps are requesting data and permissions and tweak or revoke access accordingly. It even has a Wall of Shame that displays which apps have been the most data hungry in the past day or month.

/e/OS has its own comprehensive app marketplace, App Lounge, where users can download apps available in Google Play and F-Droid anonymously. App Lounge also assigns a 0-10 privacy score to every app in the store, based on the number of permissions required and trackers, so users can make informed choices.

Furthermore, users can take advantage of Murena Workspace, Murena’s privacy focused answer to Office365 or Google Drive, with full file storage and backup and office suites. It’s free to register an account and use up to 1GB of storage, with incremental and affordable paid plans available thereafter

Rik Viergever, COO at Murena

“Our mission is to make data privacy accessible and possible for everyone, /e/OS is free to use and can be flashed to many smartphones and tablets, but many people lack the technical knowledge, or confidence, to flash it to their device which is why we offer out-of-the-box solutions which anyone who is comfortable using a smartphone can operate. It’s important that we still let users do what they want with the device, which is why we aim to educate with things like the Wall of Shame and app lounge, rather than remove access to social media, for instance.”

“Many smartphone users are aware that their data is being collected and sold against their will but lack the technical skills to stop it – this is what we want to change.”

Murena Pixel Tablet is available now, directly from Murena.com for £448.84 (+£21.98 shipping) / $549 (+$10 shipping). All taxes and customs are included in the price.
