Roku’s smart home ambitions just got a little more serious, with the streaming specialist taking the covers off a duo of new battery-powered security cameras.

The Roku Battery Camera and Roku Battery Camera Plus themselves aren’t exactly groundbreaking, what’s interesting is that these look to be the first Roku-branded cameras designed entirely in-house.

Until now, Roku’s smart home gear (like its Indoor Security Camera) was basically rebadged Wyze hardware.

Both new cameras are wireless, weather-resistant, and built to be super simple to install. The standard model is expected to run up to six months on a single charge, while the Plus version could last as long as two years.

There’s also an optional solar panel accessory, which could eliminate the need to manually recharge at all.

Specs-wise, they’re pretty much what you’d expect from a mid-range (and we’d hope, affordable) smart security camera: 1080p full-color video, color night vision, motion detection, and alerts.

You’ll need a subscription if you want cloud storage or smarter motion notifications, and there’s no option for local storage.

Naturally, Roku has baked deep integration into its TVs and streaming devices. You’ll be able to monitor your cameras directly on your TV, either full-screen or using a Picture-in-Picture view while you binge your latest show.

Setup is handled through the Roku Smart Home app, with a guided walkthrough designed to keep the process idiot-proof.

Pricing details are still under wraps, but the new cameras – and the solar panel accessory – are set to land in the coming months.

It’s a clear move away from being “just” a streaming brand, and a hint that Roku wants to own more of the connected home… not just the TV on your wall.
